One of my favorite things about getting ready for the holidays is prepping my home for guests. I love setting out crisp sheets, displaying cute mini toiletries and baking holiday snacks!
Recently, I have realized furry visitors do not get as much attention as human ones. It is often stressful for a traveling pet, and when they come into a new home, they tend to look for something comforting.
This is why I thought of creating a nice gift basket for a visiting pet. Thanks to Target and Purina, the gift basket can be super affordable with their $10 off a $40 purchase using a text offer. Text PETS10 to 827438 to receive the offer!
The offer starts the week of Dec. 4! You don’t have to print anything out! Just text, and the offer is yours – even if you forget to do it until you are in the store!
I have a family of 7, and we collectively have 10 dogs. Not all of them are visiting me, but it is important to know what kind of dog (or any other pet) is visiting you to create your basket.
Purina and Target have been so helpful in this endeavor! I would never want to spend a holiday without my beloved pets, and Purina makes it so much easier and affordable to do things for them.
The best thing about using their offer in connection with the gift basket is you can get so much for $40 (or $30 with coupon)! Target has an amazing selection of pet gifts, and Purina has an exceptional variety! If your pet (or visiting pet) has a need, Purina products can fill it.
THE GIFT BASKET
First, you need to find some kind of container. I found this cute basket at Target in the dollar bins! If you really want to go all out, you can find a dog bed with raised ends for the basket (probably best for a smaller dog).
Second, you need to pick out some festive tissue paper (trust me, your visiting pet will appreciate the attention to detail). I loved the little gold details in this paper I found at Target, and I thought it complemented the silver-ish basket!
Third, you need a jar to put dog food in. Purina makes two different formulas that have meat as the first ingredient, which is a good sign of quality food. In my two pup household, our favorites are Purina Beyond Salmon, Egg and Pumpkin and Purina Beneful Original with Real Chicken.
Purina Beyond Salmon, Egg and Pumpkin is a great option for your pet with a lot of hair. I have two Australian Shepherds, and it is very important for me for them to have beautiful fur. The omega-3s and oils in this dry food helps keep their coat shiny and healthy.
We also are fans of the Purina Beneful Originals with Real Chicken. This dry food is affordable and great for any pet! Purina’s new formula makes beef the first ingredient listed!
In the jar, you can even mix the two dry dog foods from Purina to get all the benefits!
If you have a visiting cat, grab some Purina Friskies wet food. I don’t know much about cats, but the rumor is they adore wet food, especially Friskies!
After you have the jar ready, put it in the basket. Next, add toys that fit the breed and size of the dog. My puppy, Fiona, loves to chew on rope toys because of the fraying string. However, my full-sized Aussie, Schmidt, loves big toys that he can throw around.
Target of course had the perfect options for the basket. I found a giant hot dog for the older dog, and a tug-a-war rope for the puppy! Target also had a pizza and a hamburger, but the hot dog was so perfect, I couldn’t resist
The next step requires you to ask the owner what special needs their pets has. Once you know, add the treats that best fit the pet coming to your house.
Here are a few of my favorite treats from Purina:
Purina Beneful Healthy Smiles Dental Twists
These are for the dog with the slobbering bad breath. Chewing on the twists help clean the dogs teeth and the treat freshens the dogs breath! I always add these because as much as I love to cuddle with dogs, it helps when they have good breath.
Purina Busy Bones
These are for puppies. Whenever I leave my puppy alone, she cries in her crate. If I give her Purina Busy Bone, she can gnaw away until I get home. The best part about these are they are not rawhide, so they are perfectly safe. Make sure you get the right size for the dog!
Purina Beneful Baked Delights Stars
My mom was the first person to introduce these to me! On Schmidt’s first Christmas, my mom had bought them for him because she thought they looked like Christmas cookies. We have bought them every year ever since! Of course, the first year in 2013 there were only three dogs eating the “Christmas Cookies”. Now there are 10.
COMBINATION RECOMMENDATIONS:
Puppy: Purina Busy Bones (mini) and Purina Beneful Healthy Smiles Dental Twists
Active Dog: Purina Busy Bones Chewnola and Purina Beneful Baked Delights Stars
Senior Dog: Purina Healthy Smiles Dental Twists and Purina Beneful Baked Delights Snackers
Now for the finishing touches! In the dollar bin at Target (I could live in that section), I found a fuzzy stocking. It is perfect for a visiting dog during the holidays.
I also added some poop bags. These are mainly for you because no one wants a poop minefield in their backyard.
I purchased all Purina products at Target and I saved $10, so I only spent around $30 for my family’s pet to feel comfortable while we they are visiting. It is such a relief to have one less thing to worry about when you have family down. Plus, it is a very thoughtful gesture.
What are your favorite dog treats?
Momma Told Me
This is such a great idea! We actually have several dogs that visit this time of the year! #client
