Lately, I have been trying to make more positive changes in my life. I really care about the environment and health, and I have been trying to have that reflect in my new home.
When I first bought my home, I was so excited to be able to easily recycle and switch my electricity to green energy. I have also been big on conserving water and energy for environmental and financial reasons, but I still wanted to do more.
In the last few months, I made 5 little changes that have made a big impact on how natural my home operates.
Compost
I started a compost bin! This is one of the easiest things you can do as a homeowner.
I started by getting a plastic totes and drilling air holes all around it. Once I was done with that, I collected newspaper clippings, leaves and potting soil. I mixed everything inside the tote and watered it just a tad.
Then, I bought an indoor compost container for my kitchen waste. I fill it up with leftover vegetables, coffee grounds, egg shells and fruit leftovers. Once my container is full, I empty it into my compost bucket outside.
Your composting materials should smell natural – not gross.
Switch your shampoo/conditioner
Another easy change started with what I actually put on my body! I have always been conscious of what I put on my face, but I had never really put much thought into what I put in my hair.
After I went to the hairstylist, they told me to look into sulfate-free products because they will damage my hair less. I am constantly changing up my hair, so I need a product that will keep my hair looking brilliant.
AVEENO PURE RENEWAL® Shampoo and Conditioner contains naturally derived cleansers and a sulfate free formula to gently cleanse your hair and scalp.
These are great too if you have sensitive skin or a sensitive scalp. These are also dye-free and paraben-free. I love seeing results from using better products for a natural lifestyle.
You can find the AVEENO PURE RENEWAL® line at the hair care aisle at Walmart. You can also use this coupon for $1.00 off one AVEENO® product, excluding trial and travel sizes.
Switch your detergent
Probably one of the easiest changes I made was my detergent. I started using the sulfate-free all® fresh clean ESSENTIALS®. The new sulfate-free all® fresh clean ESSENTIALS® delivers a powerful clean without the harshness.
The sulfate-free formula infuses into the fabric with proven ingredients that get rid of stains and deep clean clothing. You can read and understand all the ingredients in the bottle, so you know what it going into your laundry – WHICH I LOVE!
The all® fresh clean ESSENTIALS® is one of the first products to put their ingredients on the bottle for consumers to see! I love that they did this because it is easier to trust a brand if they’re honest with you from the beginning!
The detergent can be found at the top shelf on the laundry aisle at your local Walmart. You can also use this coupon to get .50 off your all® purchase while supplies last!
Reusable bags
The next time you are at your grocery store, stock up on reusable bags! First of all, they are more practical because you can fit more inside them.
When I lived in an apartment, they were my favorite thing because I had less trips upstairs.
Second of all, think of all the plastic bags you are saving! You can fit 3-5 plastic bags worth of stuff in one reusable bag!
Plus, reusable bags are great for travelling, picnic-ing and going to the beach!
Use useful plants
Instead of buying things with harsh chemicals, trying planting plants that are useful! Rosemary and Citronella are great mosquito repellants, and I love to plant Lavender to use as a fragrance in my home!
You can also plant your own herbs and vegetables – like tomatoes and peppers!
How do you keep a more natural home?
