I love fresh vegetables, and I have always wanted a garden! Unfortunately, even after I bought my house, my dogs run over everything!
After some research, I decided to try my hand at a container garden. Container gardens are great for apartment living – or living with crazy pets!
SUPPLIES
2-3 plants (we planted squash, peppers and onion)

Potting Soil
Patience
I started by going to a local nursery. I tend to trust local greenhouses more than big box stores, and I love helping small businesses! We selected to squash, peppers and Texas onions – getting two of each.
It is important to start small. You don’t want to overwhelm yourself with too many vegetables. If you are an EXTREME beginner, you might want to start with a herb garden.
I already had tons of pots from previous failures in gardening, but be sure to get pots that will give your vegetable room to go.
And finally, be sure to find a good potting soil. I recommend talking to a gardener about which one to get. There are so many types of potting soil! I am lucky enough that our local greenhouse is incredibly helpful, and they helped us pick out the best kind.
I also use gloves and a spade. You can find these for cheap at Tuesday Morning or TJ Maxx.
PLANTING
When you decide to start planting, be sure to reference a growing calendar. You want to see what grows best in your area, and you want to plant it at the right time.
Once you are sure it is time to plant, start with an empty pot, potting soil, and your first plant.
Be sure to fill the pot up with enough potting soil that your plant sits on top. Also be sure to fill all the edges around the plant with potting soil.
I personally like spritzing the leaves during transplanting. I feel like this helps keep moisture in the plant.
Immediately water after transplanting! This is so important for the plant to grow!
AFTERCARE
Depending on what plant you chose, you need to make sure you care for it properly.
The things you really need to pay attention to is how much do you water it; how much sun does it need; and how often do you need to fertilize it.
