The first time I had a migraine, I was in Kindergarten. I remember crying all the way home on the bus because everything was too bright, and my whole head hurt.
Migraines have been an obstacle in my life ever since – especially when severe weather season hits in Texas. Migraines affected my school life, work life and personal life.
Luckily, with three migraine sufferers in my family, we have a few tips that have stood the test of time. Aside from trying to live a healthier lifestyle, these tips can help relieve some pain when a migraine hits.
USE PEPPERMINT ESSENTIAL OIL
When I was a little kid, my mom would mix peppermint essential oil and Vaporub and put it in a humidifier. She would also mix some and put it under my nose.
This scent has always helped relieve some of the pressure in my head during a migraine or a sinus headache. As an adult, I also add it to a diffuser I keep in my room – as well as rub it on my temple and wrists.
HOT AND COLD COMPRESS
This tip is tried and true for good reason – it works! I start with a hot compress for about 15 minutes, and then I do a cold compress for 5 minutes.
I prefer a hot compress, so if you are in a lot of pain, I suggest keeping a hot compress on.
STEAM BATH
Every time I wake up with a migraine, I take a hot bath. I want a lot of steam, so I put a towel under the door.
Plus, you can drizzle some peppermint oil in the bath. Baths relieve so much pain for me, and I highly recommend them.
PRETZELS
I went to the nurse a lot growing up for migraines, and she kept a special bag of pretzels for me. She always told me to suck on them, and the salt would help.
Surprisingly, it really works. I also use them when I get hangovers.
GATORADE
Electrolytes are little miracles, yall. Gatorade is vital when I have a migraine – I always keep one stocked in the fridge.
