Horror movies are my go-to all year, but I understand that they are an acquired taste to some. If you are someone who only gets the itch to be frightened once a year, don’t fret – I have your back.
For this list of horror movies, I tried to include films that you might have missed or never heard of if you didn’t have an ear for the gore and horror scene. These films vary in age, quality, and theme, but all of them either gave me a scare or made me think.
I created this list for Halloween fans who stream on Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, and HBO Max. If you want to request another streaming service, please leave a comment below!
NETFLIX HORROR MOVIES
For my Netflix streamers, these are ten movies to get you started. If you enjoy Creep or the Babysitter, they both have sequels available on the platform. And if you are a fan of Hush, the creator is the same guy who did The Haunting at Hill House, The Haunting at Bly Manor, and Midnight Mass.
- SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK
- CREEP
- CAM
- THE BABYSITTER
- THE PERFECTION
- BLAIR WITCH
- 1BR
- AFTERMATH
- THE MIST
- HUSH
- THE BOY
AMAZON PRIME HORROR MOVIES
Amazon Prime has so many horror films, it is easy to get overwhelmed. Odd Thomas is a weird one, but it is very different, and since I watched it almost 10 years ago, I have never forgotten it. Goodnight Mommy is a remake of an Austrian film, and it will never be as good as the original, but it was a good effort.
- CANDYMAN
- A HOUSE ON THE BAYOU
- ODD THOMAS
- GOODNIGHT MOMMY
- NOCTURNE
- BLACK BOX
- THE LIE
- WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN
- THE INVITATION
HBO MAX HORROR MOVIES
HBO Max does not have the horror collection I want it to have, but it still has some golden pieces there. The Shining and Doctor Sleep go hand and hand, so be sure to watch those together. As for Tusk, I will warn you, it is pretty gross.
- MALIGNANT
- THE NIGHT HOUSE
- DOCTOR SLEEP
- THE WITCH
- LAST NIGHT IN SOHO
- TUSK
- THE SHINING
- RED EYE
- WE’RE ALL GOING TO THE WORLD’S FAIR
HULU HORROR MOVIES
Hulu has so many good indie horror films that it was hard to choose. I will make a caveat to this list – Evil Dead and Urban Legends: Bloody Mary have a special place in my heart. Yes, they are both corny, but Evil Dead was the first premiere I was invited to, and Urban Legends scared the bejesus out of me in middle school.
- YOU ARE NOT MY MOTHER
- EVIL DEAD
- PARASITE
- URBAN LEGENDS: BLOODY MARY
- BLACK SWAN
- LIGHTS OUT
- UNSANE
- FRESH
- LITTLE HORRORS
*These horror movies were available as of October 2022. The list may no longer be accurate after this time.
